Words, continued ?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

In the previous article, I presented the importance of words in general. Today, I want to key on the importance of one Word, specifically. That Word is actually referred to in the Bible, in the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verse 1, which states: ” In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Verse 14 states, ” And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us …” This Word made flesh is named Jesus. Now, don’t ask me about HOW the Word was made flesh. I don’t know HOW; I just believe that It was, and HE IS! Verse 3, chapter 1, goes on to say that ” ALL things were made by Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made.” Over in Colossians, chapter 1, verses 16 and 17, it further adds that: ” 16) . by Him were ALL things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: ALL things were created by Him and for Him: 17) And He is before ALL things, and by Him ALL things consist.” He, the Word, made if all, whether by a big bang or simply by speaking a word, and He holds it ALL together … keeps things from flying off the earth or the galaxies from going off course. WOW! I’ll let you chew on that for a while, but be sure: there is more to come.

The Pleasures of Words

Words. The primary source of any communication is through words, whether spoken, written, or signed. Spouses conduct family matters through words; parents/children plan vacations, make decisions, argue, or joke through words. Preachers present sermons/messages through words. Presidents and kings address nations through words. Teachers/professors instruct students by words. Doctors prescribe medicines by words. Bosses share goals, visions, and/or purposes through words. Military leaders issue orders by words. Sales people use words to convince consumers to buy. Without words there would be no newscasts, sportscasts, or forecasts.

To me, words are a pleasure. I don’t always hear what is said, but I still appreciate who is doing the talking. All I’ve learned over the years has been gained by words. Where would we be without words? It would be like living alone among people. Even body language and unspoken gestures were explained at some point in time by words; otherwise we wouldn’t know what the expressions or gestures meant.

Here is a very brief list of known phrases having to do with W-O-R-D-S : “as good as one’s word”; beyond words; by word of mouth; eat one’s words; from the word go; man of his word; mince words; not breathe a word; put words in one’s mouth; take one at one’s words; take the words out of one’s mouth; the last word; etc., etc. So, to end this article, I’d have to say in a word that words are as important as air. Tune in later for more on words. Thank you.
